J hooks are a popular method of cable support used today by many contractors. A simple hook shaped like a letter J, they are quick and easy to install, especially in cramped or restricted areas where utilising other methods such as cable support trays or raceways is not practical.

J hooks, generally speaking, are never used just on their own. A J hook will be installed along with an attachment, the type of which will depend on what is needed for the job. Fittings are designed for J hooks that allow them to be attached to columns, structural ceilings, beams, or walls. J hooks can be used in most locations, all that is needed to change is the attachment used to secure them to a fixed point such as the wall or ceiling.

Examples of J hook attachments include beam clamps, angle brackets, wire rod clips, hammer on clips, and eye coupling threaded rods. There are also subcategories for many of these attachments. A beam clamp, for example, might have an adjustable screw to tighten it, a hammer on clip, or simply be knocked on to secure it to the beam.

The attachment is also designed so that mounting the J hook on it will not affect or compromise the cables that the J hook will be used to support. It is important to ensure that both the J hook and its attachment are secure before laying any cables on it or subjecting it to weight.
